The salmon has many predators and very many salmon do not make it throughout their whole life. For more information on the salmon predators, read below.
The first stage of a salmon is an egg. After they are born, the spawner covers the eggs in gravel to protect them from predators. But, the eggs that aren't covered are in danger of being eaten by blue herons, osprey, otters, the American eel, merganser or a kingfisher. Those are the predators of the salmon egg.
The second stage of a salon is an alevin. The egg just hatched but stays very near the gravel. The predators that hunt for the alevins are the same as the eggs: blue herons, osprey, otters, the American eel, merganser or a kingfisher.
The third stage of the salmon is the fry. The fish has now grown and is starting to look like a regular fish. The predators for the fry are almost the same: blue herons, osprey, otters, the American eel, merganser or a kingfisher except for seagulls and cormorants now search for frys.

The fourth stage of a salmon is a smolt. The smolt now adapts to the salt water without consuming it in it's blood stream. Because the smolt is in salt water, it has much different predators such as: a cod fish, tern, seagulls, cormorants, lamprey eel, a seal,a bear and a shark.
The fifth stage of a salmon is the adult salmon. The salmon is now practically full grown and commences its journey downstream. It does live in salt water, equivalent to the smolt so it has the same predators: a cod fish, tern, seagulls, cormorants, lamprey eel, a seal, a bear and a shark.
The sixth and final stage of a salmon is a spawner. The spawner ends its journey and returns to where it was born. Before dying, it lays its eggs and covers them. Unfortunately, the spawner still has predators which happen to be the same as the other saltwater fish: a cod fish, tern, seagulls, cormorants, lamprey eel, a seal, a bear and a shark.
